Why this matters in the United States

Families with children make up a large share of homelessness nationwide, and they are less visible than people sleeping outdoors: doubled up with relatives, staying in motels or sleeping in cars. Parents frequently work but cannot meet rents that have risen faster than wages, and an eviction record or a single missed paycheck can shut them out of the private rental market.

Emergency shelters in many towns are built for single adults, and some separate fathers or teenage sons from the rest of the family. Family shelter beds are scarce outside large cities, and federal housing assistance reaches only a fraction of eligible households, with waiting lists that run for years. Congregations have stepped in because they have kitchens, spare rooms and volunteers, and because a network of churches, mosques, synagogues and temples can share the load so that no single community carries it all year.

What your gift pays for

  • Cots, linens and cleaning supplies for congregations hosting families overnight in their buildings
  • Evening meals cooked by volunteers for parents and children staying in shelter
  • Day-center costs, including showers, laundry and a mailing address for job applications
  • Case management that helps parents find permanent housing and keep it

Family Promise · United States

US IRS EIN (Family Promise of Lawrence Inc) · No. 26-2709610

Founded 1988 · Headquarters: Summit

National network of affiliates in which interfaith congregations provide shelter, meals and support to families experiencing homelessness.

How they work: In the Family Promise model, host congregations take turns sheltering a small number of families for a week at a time, providing beds, meals and company, while a day center gives families a base for job searching and case management. The rotation spreads the work across many faith communities so no single one is overstretched. Local affiliates have since added eviction-prevention programs and follow-up support for families after they move into housing.

Track record: Family Promise's Interfaith Hospitality Network model links some 6,000 congregations and 180,000+ volunteers who host homeless families in rotating emergency shelter.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
