Why this matters in Israel

Jewish and Arab teenagers can grow up a few kilometers apart and almost never have a real conversation. Most attend separate school systems, Hebrew-language schools on one side and Arabic-language schools on the other, and they live largely in separate towns or neighborhoods. Contact, when it happens, tends to come through news reports, security checks or the street, not friendship.

Since the October 7, 2023 attack and the war in Gaza that followed, mistrust between the communities has deepened, and joint activities that once ran easily have become harder to organize. Parents worry about safety, and young people face social pressure against meeting the other side. Formal schooling rarely offers structured encounter, so regular small-group meetings outside the classroom are one of the few places where a Jewish teenager and a Muslim or Christian Arab of the same age can meet repeatedly, talk about faith and identity, and keep meeting when the news is bad.

What your gift pays for

  • Trained facilitators who guide each group through conversations on faith, identity and current events
  • Transport for participants traveling between Jewish and Arab towns to attend meetings
  • Venue rental, shared meals and materials for regular group sessions
  • Retreats and holiday-themed gatherings that bring several youth groups together for longer encounters

Organization

Interfaith Encounter Association · Israel

Israeli Corporations Authority, Registrar of Associations (amuta number) · No. 580379493

Founded 2001 · Headquarters: Jerusalem

Israeli NGO running ongoing interfaith encounter groups, including youth groups, bringing together Jews, Muslims and Christians.

How they work: IEA's groups meet regularly over months or years, not as one-off events, and each is coordinated by a pair of facilitators from different communities. Sessions often start from religious texts, festivals and traditions, using what participants share and where they differ as a way into harder subjects. Groups form around a place or a shared profile, such as students or women, and IEA periodically brings several groups together for longer retreats.

Track record: In 2025 IEA oversaw 361 interfaith encounters across a roster of 135 groups, with an estimated over 4,000 participants; 6 new groups were created.

Giving in Israel

Faith communities and cultural heritage run through the causes for Israel. Colel Chabad funds soup kitchens, grocery deliveries and food cards for elderly and low-income families, while the Interfaith Encounter Association brings Jewish and Arab young people together through ongoing encounter groups. Sidreh, a Bedouin women's weaving initiative in the Negev, trains apprentices in traditional crafts that risk disappearing as fewer young people take them up.
