Funds bilingual teaching materials in Mayan languages for rural schools where children start formal education without fluency in Spanish, the language of instruction.
Why this matters in Guatemala
Twenty-two Mayan languages are officially recognized in Guatemala, along with Xinka and Garífuna, and in many highland villages K'iche', Q'eqchi', Mam or Kaqchikel is the only language a child hears before starting school. Yet classroom teaching, textbooks and tests are largely in Spanish. A six-year-old who cannot follow the teacher falls behind in the first year, and repetition and dropout are common in rural Indigenous areas.
Bilingual intercultural education is official policy, and the education ministry has a directorate devoted to it, but practice lags. Many teachers in Mayan-speaking communities were trained only in Spanish, or are posted to schools where a different Mayan language is spoken. Books written in local languages are scarce, and many homes have no children's books at all. Without materials in the language children already speak, early reading turns into memorizing sounds rather than understanding, and the gap with urban, Spanish-speaking pupils widens through primary school.

Reading for Life literacy programme uses Mayan-speaking trainers and children's first languages in rural schools.
How they work: Child Aid works with whole communities over several years rather than single schools for a few months. Its teacher workshops focus on practical reading instruction, such as reading aloud, discussing stories and building comprehension, and trainers then visit classrooms to coach teachers as they apply the techniques. Books go into classrooms and community libraries so that children can read them in school and take them home.
Track record: Has helped create 35 community libraries, runs reading programmes in more than 50 Guatemalan communities and provides training and classroom follow-up for hundreds of rural teachers.

Giving in Guatemala
Language and terrain set the agenda in rural Guatemala. Many children begin school speaking a Mayan language rather than Spanish, so one cause funds bilingual teaching materials, and another provides practical skills training for rural youth with limited access to secondary school. Mountain villages without piped water gain protected springs and gravity-fed systems through Agua del Pueblo, and working animals on small farms receive veterinary care. Partners are Guatemalan organizations with roots in the communities they serve.
4 causes are listed in Guatemala, each with its own verified organization. $281,970 has been distributed to causes in Guatemala since 2021.
