Why this matters in Haiti

Armed gangs control most of Port-au-Prince and key roads leading out of it, and reporters covering them work in some of the most dangerous conditions in the hemisphere. Journalists have been shot while covering clashes, killed in a gang attack on the reopening of the capital's main public hospital in December 2024, kidnapped for ransom, and named in threats circulated by gang leaders. Broadcasters' premises have been attacked and set on fire, forcing some stations off the air or into new locations.

Most local journalists work for small radio stations or online outlets, many as freelancers, with low pay and no insurance. Few can afford protective vests, helmets or secure communications, and attacks on the press are rarely investigated or prosecuted, so threats carry little cost for those who make them. Radio remains the main news source for much of the country, which makes reporters' safety a question of public information as well as personal risk.

What your gift pays for

Giving in Haiti

Armed gang control of neighborhoods, and the displacement it causes, links the three causes listed for Haiti. Zanmi Lasante, the Haitian arm of Partners In Health, runs oral rehydration points and chlorination during cholera outbreaks in displacement settlements. The Bureau des Avocats Internationaux gives displaced families free legal help, from replacing lost documents to protecting property claims, and the Association des Journalistes Haitiens provides security equipment and legal support to reporters covering the violence and political instability. Each partner works within an ongoing security crisis.

3 causes are listed in Haiti, each with its own verified organization. $263,797 has been distributed to causes in Haiti since 2021.
