Why this matters in the United Kingdom
Two groups of young people face particular danger when they have nowhere to sleep: children who arrive in Britain alone, often after long and violent crossings, and care-leavers who turn eighteen and lose the support of a foster family or children's home. Councils have legal duties to both, and English rules now require supported accommodation for 16- and 17-year-olds to be registered with Ofsted. Even so, shortages mean some young people are placed in hostels or unsuitable rooms, or end up sofa-surfing.

A safe bed on the first night, with staff who know the young person's name, breaks that pattern before it starts. How they work: Centrepoint pairs accommodation with a dedicated key worker, so a young person does not just get a room but someone who helps them plan what comes next. Its own health team offers mental and physical health support, and its learning and work service helps residents back into education, training or jobs. The charity also runs a helpline for young people at risk of homelessness and an independent living program offering flats with rents linked to the tenant's earnings, to bridge the step out of supported housing.
Track record: In 2024/25 Centrepoint and its partners supported over 15,000 homeless young people, running more than 800 bed spaces across 90 supported housing services.
