Funds transitional housing for homeless veterans, a population found to face roughly three times the overdose death risk of housed veterans.
Why this matters in the United States
The January 2025 national point-in-time count found 32,495 veterans experiencing homelessness, the lowest since the count began in 2009, but still tens of thousands of people without a stable home. That fall came largely from targeted federal programs such as HUD-VASH housing vouchers and the VA's Supportive Services for Veteran Families, but progress is uneven, and in high-cost regions such as Los Angeles large numbers of veterans still sleep outdoors or in vehicles.
A voucher alone does not house someone who has spent years on the street with addiction, chronic illness or PTSD, and landlords in tight rental markets often turn voucher holders away. Some veterans also fall outside VA eligibility because of other-than-honorable discharges. Transitional housing gives people a stable bed, sobriety support and case management while they wait for permanent housing, and it is often where veterans first reconnect with benefits they are owed.

Organization
U.S.VETS (United States Veterans Initiative) · United States
IRS (EIN) · No. 95-4382752
Founded 1993 · Headquarters: Los Angeles
US nonprofit operating transitional and permanent housing and support services for homeless and at-risk veterans at multiple sites.
How they work: U.S.VETS runs residential sites where veterans live while working through a structured plan with a case manager, with counseling, substance use support and employment services on site. Much of its housing is funded through VA programs such as Grant and Per Diem transitional housing and Supportive Services for Veteran Families, and private donations cover what those grants leave out. Some sites also offer permanent supportive housing for older and disabled veterans.
Track record: Founded in 1993, U.S.VETS serves more than 20,000 veterans and families every year across 49 residential sites and 189 programs nationwide.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
