Funds peer advocates who help people experiencing homelessness reach health care, a population with substantially higher rates of untreated depression and anxiety than the general public.
Why this matters in the United Kingdom
People sleeping rough or moving between hostels and friends' sofas in London die decades younger than the general population, and much of that gap comes from treatable conditions: chest infections, foot problems, dental disease, diabetes, hepatitis C and untreated mental illness. Depression and anxiety are common, often alongside trauma and drug or alcohol use, and each makes the others harder to manage.
The barriers are practical as much as medical. Some people are turned away from GP registration for lacking proof of address, although NHS guidance says none is needed. Appointment letters go to addresses people have left. Waiting rooms can feel hostile to someone who has slept outside, and a missed appointment can mean going back to the end of a long queue. Many end up in emergency departments with problems that started small. Care that comes to day centers and hostels, or someone who helps a person reach it, catches those problems earlier.

Organization
Groundswell · United Kingdom
Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1089987
Founded 1996 · Headquarters: London
London charity helping people experiencing homelessness access health care via peer advocacy.
How they work: Groundswell's model puts people who have been homeless at the center of its work. Peer advocates, many of them former clients who are trained and supported from volunteer roles toward paid work, meet clients beforehand, travel with them to appointments and help them speak up with clinicians. The charity also carries out peer-led research that brings the views of homeless people into NHS and local-authority planning.
Track record: Groundswell's Homeless Health Peer Advocacy, staffed largely by people with lived experience of homelessness, supports clients to attend health appointments.

Giving in the United Kingdom
Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
