Funds watershed protection in mountain regions affected by glacial melt and erosion.
Why this matters in Nepal
Hill villages in the middle mountains draw most of their household water from springs, not from rivers or glaciers. Many of those springs are drying up or flowing only during the monsoon, as rainfall becomes more erratic, slopes lose vegetation and new rural roads cut across the paths water takes underground. Women and girls usually walk the extra distance. Higher up, Himalayan glaciers are retreating, which changes when and how much water reaches rivers and raises the risk of sudden floods from glacial lakes.
Erosion compounds the problem. Landslides after heavy rain strip farmland, block roads and silt the streams that feed small irrigation canals and hydropower plants. Local governments created under Nepal's federal system now hold responsibility for water and natural resources, but many lack technical staff and budgets for catchment work. Protecting the recharge area above a spring, planting slopes and building small ponds are low-cost measures, yet they need surveying, community agreement and upkeep that rarely gets funded.
What your gift pays for
- Spring source protection, including fencing and planting of recharge zones above the spring
- Small conservation ponds that capture runoff and let it soak into the ground
- Bioengineering on unstable slopes with grasses, bamboo and small check dams
- Training for community user groups to maintain water sources and plan for dry seasons

Runs watershed management projects building climate resilience in Nepal's mountain regions.
How they work: WWF Nepal works largely through community-based institutions, especially community forest user groups and local water user committees, alongside municipalities and government agencies. In watershed projects it pairs scientific assessment of springs and sub-basins with community-led action, such as protecting recharge zones, building ponds and promoting climate-adapted farming practices. It also supports adaptation planning at river-basin scale, so village-level measures fit a wider plan for the catchment.
Track record: From 2017 WWF Nepal ran spring-source conservation and conservation ponds in the Indrawati sub-basin, where earlier work from 2013 benefited over 5,000 local people.

Giving in Nepal
Mountain geography and migration run through the four Nepali causes. One places teaching Fellows in rural public schools, including in earthquake-affected districts, where qualified teachers are scarce; another protects Himalayan watersheds strained by glacial melt and erosion. Two focus on women: legal briefings before women leave for domestic work abroad, and legal aid for widows whose inheritance rights are contested under customary land practices. Partners are mostly Nepali organizations, including Teach For Nepal, Pourakhi Nepal and Women for Human Rights, alongside WWF Nepal.
4 causes are listed in Nepal, each with its own verified organization. $386,692 has been distributed to causes in Nepal since 2021.
