Funds spring protection and gravity-fed water systems for mountain villages without piped water access.
Why this matters in Guatemala
Maya communities in the western highlands, in departments such as Quiché, Huehuetenango, Totonicapán and San Marcos, often live in scattered hamlets on steep slopes far from municipal water networks, and many households still have no tap at home. Women and children carry water uphill from springs and streams that livestock and runoff frequently contaminate, and child stunting in these areas is among the highest in Latin America.
Municipalities are legally responsible for water service, but rural municipalities lack money and technical staff, and their systems rarely reach outlying aldeas. Springs at higher elevations offer a practical answer: protecting the source and piping water downhill by gravity avoids pumps, electricity and fuel bills. These systems need careful surveying, sound design, quality pipe and an organized water committee to last for decades, a combination that a hamlet of a few dozen families cannot put together alone.
What your gift pays for
- Spring boxes and fencing that protect water sources from livestock and surface runoff
- Conduction pipe, storage tanks and break-pressure boxes for gravity-fed systems
- Household tap connections and simple chlorination at the storage tank
- Tree planting around spring catchments to protect water flow over the long term

IRS (EIN) (US affiliate: People's Consultants - Agua del Pueblo-USA) · No. 23-7433371
Founded 1972 · Headquarters: Quetzaltenango
Guatemalan NGO founded in 1972 (HQ Quetzaltenango) that builds rural potable water and sanitation systems in the Mayan highlands.
How they work: Agua del Pueblo's method rests on community self-financing and participation: villages commit to raising funds and building the water lines together, and systems are designed so residents can maintain them without outside help. Water projects are combined with health education, sanitation and reforestation, and communities that follow the approach have gone on to build schools, clinics and roads.
Track record: Founded in 1972, Agua del Pueblo has completed more than 500 rural water and sanitation projects serving over 1,000 Guatemalan communities, initially focused on spring-fed gravity systems.

Giving in Guatemala
Language and terrain set the agenda in rural Guatemala. Many children begin school speaking a Mayan language rather than Spanish, so one cause funds bilingual teaching materials, and another provides practical skills training for rural youth with limited access to secondary school. Mountain villages without piped water gain protected springs and gravity-fed systems through Agua del Pueblo, and working animals on small farms receive veterinary care. Partners are Guatemalan organizations with roots in the communities they serve.
4 causes are listed in Guatemala, each with its own verified organization. $281,970 has been distributed to causes in Guatemala since 2021.
