Why this matters in Bulgaria

Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval layers sit on top of one another across Bulgaria, and there are far more archaeological and historic sites than any heritage budget can maintain. Public money tends to go to flagship excavations and major visitor attractions, while smaller sites, such as village churches with medieval wall paintings, Roman villas or walls left exposed after a dig, slip into neglect.

Exposure is the core problem. Once a site is excavated, its stone, plaster and mosaics begin weathering, and without conservation and shelter they can deteriorate within a few years. Illegal treasure hunting with metal detectors remains a persistent threat in the countryside. Churches in depopulating rural regions often have no congregation left to care for them, and frescoes flake as roofs leak. Careful documentation preserves a great deal on its own: a thoroughly recorded church or collection of finds stays available to scholars and local communities even if the building itself continues to decline.

What your gift pays for

  • Conservation of excavated walls, mosaics and pottery that start decaying once exposed
  • Detailed photographic and drawn records of medieval churches and their wall paintings
  • Specialist conservators supervising field teams at sites outside national programs
  • Protective shelters, drainage and basic repairs that slow weather damage at vulnerable sites

Organization

Balkan Heritage Foundation · Bulgaria

Founded 2008 · Headquarters: Stara Zagora

Bulgarian NGO founded in 2008 that runs archaeological field schools and conservation projects at archaeological and cultural sites in Bulgaria and the Balkans.

How they work: Balkan Heritage Foundation funds and staffs much of its work through field schools. Students and volunteers from many countries enroll in excavation, conservation and documentation projects, learning from archaeologists and conservators while doing real work on site. Projects run in partnership with local museums, universities and municipalities responsible for the sites, so finds and conserved material remain with those institutions and the results feed into their research and displays.

Track record: Since 2009 the foundation has run conservation projects on Greek and Hellenistic pottery from Apollonia Pontica (Sozopol) and has documented medieval churches in western Bulgaria since 2008.

Giving in Bulgaria

Rural decline is the background to two of the Bulgarian causes. Villages with some of Europe's fastest-shrinking populations are left with older residents who need company and care, and the Bulgarian Red Cross and Caritas Bulgaria respond with volunteer visits and shared caregiving support. The third cause, with the Balkan Heritage Foundation, restores smaller archaeological and cultural sites that fall outside major national funding, protecting heritage that would otherwise be left to deteriorate.

3 causes are listed in Bulgaria, each with its own verified organization. $341,097 has been distributed to causes in Bulgaria since 2021.
