Provides small business loans to women entrepreneurs in a market where women-owned businesses receive a small fraction of formal bank lending.
Why this matters in Nigeria
Nigerian women run a large share of the country's micro and small businesses, from market stalls and food vending to tailoring, hairdressing and petty trading. Most operate informally and lack the collateral, credit history and land titles that commercial banks require, so they rely on savings clubs, family loans or moneylenders charging steep rates. Women who do approach banks often report being offered smaller loans on stricter terms than men with similar businesses.
Recent economic shocks have widened the gap. Since 2023 the naira has lost much of its value and inflation has reached levels not seen in decades, driving up the cost of stock and raw materials. A trader who once restocked each week with a modest sum may now need far more cash for the same goods. Small, quick loans with repayments matched to daily or weekly takings let women keep stock on the shelves and grow beyond subsistence trading.

Organization
Victory Empowerment Centre · Nigeria
Founded 2007 · Headquarters: Lagos
Nigerian microfinance institution providing loans to women entrepreneurs.
How they work: Victory Empowerment Centre is a registered non-bank microfinance institution rather than a charity, and it lends on commercial terms. It began with group loans, in which small groups of women borrow together and guarantee each other's repayments, and has since added individual and small-business loans for clients ready to grow. It has drawn investment from social lenders, including the ethical investment cooperative Oikocredit, which backed it to expand lending to women entrepreneurs.
Track record: Operating since 2013 with a client base about 95% women and youth, the microfinance institution has disbursed over USD 14.6 million in loans with a 97% recovery rate (2026).

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
6 causes are listed in Nigeria, each with its own verified organization. $441,629 has been distributed to causes in Nigeria since 2021.
