Groundwater Access Project

Funds groundwater recharge and protected drinking-water sources in regions where water tables have dropped sharply due to over-extraction for agriculture.
Why this matters in India
Farm pumps running on cheap or free electricity have pulled water tables down across much of north-western and peninsular India, and the shallow hand pumps and open wells that villages once relied on now run dry for months at a time. Irrigation accounts for the large majority of groundwater drawn in the country, so household drinking water competes directly with thirsty crops such as rice and sugarcane. The Central Ground Water Board's annual assessments classify many blocks in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of the south as over-exploited, meaning more is pumped each year than rain replaces.
When a village source fails, the burden falls on women and girls, who walk further, wait for irregular tanker deliveries, or buy water. Government schemes aim to bring a tap connection to every rural home, but a tap is only as reliable as the source behind it, and many piped schemes still draw on shrinking local aquifers. Structures that put rainwater back into the ground, paired with properly sited and protected drinking sources, can restore a dependable supply while the aquifer slowly recovers.
What your gift pays for
- Hydrogeological surveys that locate drilling sites in aquifers still able to sustain year-round drinking water
- Rehabilitation and sanitary sealing of village drinking-water sources to keep surface contamination out
- Water quality testing for fluoride, arsenic and salinity, which often worsen as water tables fall
- Recharge structures such as check dams and recharge pits built alongside new boreholes to replenish the aquifer
Organization
WaterAid India · India
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: WaterAid UK) · No. 288701
Founded 1986 · Headquarters: New Delhi
Runs water conservation and water-security projects in India, for example with Carlsberg India in West Bengal, Telangana and Maharashtra.
How they work: WaterAid India generally works through local partner organizations and alongside panchayats and state water departments rather than running services itself. Its water security work pairs new or rehabilitated sources with community water budgeting, in which villages map how much water they have and how it is used, and with structures that put rainwater back into the ground. It also trains local people to monitor water levels and quality, and presses for these practices to be built into government schemes.
Track record: By May 2022 WaterAid India's rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge work in Hyderabad had benefited over 23,000 people.

Giving in India
Scale defines the causes listed for India, which accounts for roughly 25 percent of global TB cases. One fund supports community TB treatment points and adherence support; others address falling groundwater, monsoon floods, degraded watersheds and irrigation for smallholder cooperatives. Social causes reach children living on city streets and workers held in debt bondage, and a central-kitchen fund carries forward the long-standing Hindu practice of giving free food, serving mainly schoolchildren. Partners include Operation ASHA, WaterAid India and International Justice Mission.
8 causes are listed in India, each with its own verified organization. $439,066 has been distributed to causes in India since 2021.
