Funds coding and digital-skills classes for underserved girls in Lagos, in a country where an estimated 10.2 million children remain out of school, among the highest totals globally.

Why this matters in Nigeria
Girls are underrepresented in senior secondary physics, further mathematics and computing classes, and the gap widens in university engineering and computer science departments. Many public secondary schools, including those serving the Lagos waterfront settlements, have a science laboratory in name only: missing reagents, broken microscopes and no working computers. Practicals required by national exam syllabuses end up being taught from the blackboard.
When households have little to spare, extra lessons and personal devices are out of reach for most children, and girls also see few women working in engineering or software to show them where the subjects lead. Classes that supply the machines remove that cost from the household. Hands-on lessons with real instruments and machines also give girls practical experience that universities and tech employers expect, instead of theory memorized only to pass an exam.
What your gift pays for

- Instructor and mentor time for project-based lessons in programming and design
- Internet data and power backup that keep classes running through grid outages
- Transport and meals so girls from low-income areas can attend every session
Organization
Pearls Africa Foundation (GirlsCoding) · Nigeria
Founded 2012 · Headquarters: Lagos
Lagos nonprofit teaching coding and STEM skills to underserved girls.
How they work: Pearls Africa Foundation runs GirlsCoding as after-school and Saturday classes in Lagos for girls aged about 10 to 17, recruiting from low-income areas such as Makoko as well as orphanages, camps for displaced people and correctional homes. Instructors and volunteer mentors teach programming and design through projects built around problems the girls see in their own neighborhoods; one group created an online market for Makoko fishers to sell their catch. The foundation has drawn in-kind support from Lagos tech companies.
Track record: Since launching GirlsCoding in November 2015, Pearls Africa Foundation has trained more than 200 girls in programming, UI design and animation, including girls from Lagos's Makoko slum.

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
