Girls' Secondary Scholarship Fund

Covers uniforms, supplies, boarding and other school-going costs so girls from low-income families can stay in secondary school.
Why this matters in Tanzania
Tanzania abolished tuition fees for public lower secondary school in 2016, yet many girls from poor households still do not finish. Families must still buy uniforms, shoes, exercise books and mathematics sets, and students far from school may need hostel fees or rent for a room in town. Distances in rural regions are long, and a girl who walks hours each way or lodges alone in an informal room faces safety risks that parents weigh heavily.
Policy has moved in the right direction. Since 2021 girls who become pregnant have been allowed to return to school after giving birth, reversing an earlier exclusion. Even so, costs that look small on paper add up for families living on farm income, and girls are often the first kept home when money runs short or help is needed in the house. Covering the full set of costs, including sanitary supplies, keeps attendance steady through the exam years.
What your gift pays for

- Boarding or hostel costs for students whose nearest secondary school is too far to walk to
- Sanitary pads and soap so girls do not miss days of school each month
- Textbooks, revision guides and mathematics sets for the years leading up to national examinations
Organization
CAMFED Tanzania · Tanzania
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: CAMFED International) · No. 1029161
Founded 2005 · Headquarters: Dar es Salaam
Supports girls from poor households to attend and complete secondary school in Tanzania, including fees and materials.
How they work: CAMFED's model rests on community ownership. Committees of parents, teachers, local leaders and officials help identify the girls most at risk of dropping out, and support follows each student through school. Young women who were once supported, organized as the CAMFED Association (CAMA), return to schools as Learner Guides who mentor students and lead life-skills sessions. CAMFED works within the government school system and shares information with education authorities, keeping support accountable to the communities it serves.
Track record: Since 2005 CAMFED has supported 126,972 students in Tanzania to attend secondary school, covering costs such as fees, uniforms, books and menstrual supplies.

Giving in Tanzania
The cost of uniforms, supplies and boarding can keep girls from low-income Tanzanian families out of secondary school, even when they are ready to continue. This fund covers those costs through CAMFED Tanzania, part of a network known for its focus on girls' education in several African countries. It is currently the one cause we list in Tanzania, and more causes may be added there as additional partners complete vetting.
This is currently the only cause we list in Tanzania. $69,173 has been distributed to causes in Tanzania since 2021.
