Why this matters in Chad

Most girls in Chad leave school before reaching the secondary level. Many are married young, as the country has one of the world's highest child marriage rates, and others are kept home to fetch water, mind younger siblings or work on the family farm. Rural schools are far apart and often lack latrines and female teachers, families face informal fees, and secondary schools are concentrated in towns.

Pressure on the system has grown with refugee arrivals. Eastern Chad has taken in hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees since war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, and southern provinces such as Logone Oriental host refugees from the Central African Republic, so host and refugee children share overstretched classrooms. For a poor family, a stipend that covers fees and supplies, and offsets some of the work a daughter would otherwise do at home, can tip the decision toward letting her continue.

What your gift pays for

  • Scholarships or stipends paid to families of girls moving from primary into lower secondary school
  • School kits, uniforms and exam fees that families often cannot meet
  • Separate latrines and handwashing points that let girls attend school during menstruation
  • Teacher training on gender-responsive teaching and on preventing harassment in school

Organization

UNICEF Chad · Chad

UN agency

Headquarters: N'Djamena

Funds school scholarships helping vulnerable girls in Chad stay in school.

How they work: UNICEF does not run schools in Chad; it supports the national education ministry and provincial education authorities. Its girls' education work typically combines cash transfers or scholarships to families, school improvements such as latrines and water points, teacher training, and community mobilization through parents' associations and mothers' groups. It also supports schooling for refugee and host-community children alongside UNHCR. Funds are spent through government and NGO implementing partners.

Track record: UNICEF's Breaking Barriers to Girls' Education project in Chad targeted 42 schools in Logone Oriental, building 78 latrine blocks and training over 100 teachers.
