Why this matters in Afghanistan

Girls in Afghanistan have been barred from secondary school beyond grade six since late 2021, and the ban was later extended to universities. It is the only country in the world where girls are formally prohibited from attending secondary school, and an entire cohort has now aged past the point at which they would have graduated. Families who want their daughters to keep learning have very few legal options.

The effects reach well beyond the classroom. In late 2024 women were also shut out of nursing and midwifery courses, closing the main route by which women trained to care for other women. UN agencies have reported rising child marriage and mental distress among adolescent girls. Informal home-based classes help fill the gap, but teachers take personal risks, many families have lost income since 2021, and books and supplies must reach students quietly. Funding has to arrive at the household level without drawing attention.

What your gift pays for

  • Monthly stipends for women teachers leading small home-based classes for older girls
  • Textbooks, notebooks and stationery delivered discreetly to the households where students study
  • Training and lesson materials that help teachers cover secondary-level subjects

Organization

Afghan Institute of Learning (Creating Hope International) · Afghanistan

US IRS EIN · No. 38-3288402

Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Dearborn

Long-running Afghan-led education programme for women and girls, backed by a US nonprofit.

How they work: AIL is Afghan-led, founded by educator Sakena Yacoobi, and has long worked on a community-request model: programs begin when local people ask for them and help provide space and support, which builds local ownership and discretion. Its teacher training emphasizes interactive, student-centered methods and critical thinking rather than rote memorization. Historically its education work has run alongside health services for women and children.

Track record: Founded in 1995, AIL ran 80 clandestine home-based schools for over 3,000 students under the Taliban (1995-2001) and by 2010 was educating about 350,000 women and girls a year.

Giving in Afghanistan

Restrictions on women and girls shape most of what is listed for Afghanistan. Two causes support community-run learning for girls barred from secondary school and vocational training through local women's organizations for women shut out of most public employment. The others fund trained birth attendants in provinces where maternal mortality remains high and well rehabilitation in villages affected by drought. Partners include the Afghan Institute of Learning, the Afghan Midwives Association and DACAAR, organizations with long experience working inside the country.

4 causes are listed in Afghanistan, each with its own verified organization. $328,840 has been distributed to causes in Afghanistan since 2021.
