Why this matters in Chad
Lac province, on the Chadian side of Lake Chad, has absorbed waves of displacement since armed groups began attacking island and shoreline communities in the mid-2010s. Families moved from the islands to camps and sites on the mainland, alongside refugees from Nigeria and Niger, often more than once. Island schools closed, and those on the mainland were small, far apart and short of trained teachers.
Girls lose out first. When money is short, sons stay in school while daughters fetch water, care for younger siblings or marry young, and the country has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world. A girl who leaves school at twelve may never learn to read, which limits her ability to run a small business, follow her own children's schooling or understand health information. Ordinary primary classes do not suit a fifteen- or twenty-year-old, so condensed literacy courses designed for older girls and young women offer them a second way in.
