Why this matters in the United Kingdom

Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects mainly boys and comes from a fault in the gene for dystrophin, a protein muscle fibers need to withstand everyday strain. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of two and five, most boys lose the ability to walk around the end of primary school, and breathing and heart problems follow in the teenage years and beyond. Steroids slow the decline, but there is no cure, and many families wait months for a diagnosis after being told their child is just clumsy.

Rare conditions like this sit in an awkward spot for drug development. Some therapies target a single mutation type that applies to only a small fraction of patients, so companies see a limited market, trials are hard to fill, and regulators and health technology assessors need evidence that is costly to produce. Charity funding can carry early research and trial infrastructure to the point where industry and the NHS engage, and lessons from one rare disease often carry over to others.

What your gift pays for

  • Grants for early-stage research into new therapies and existing drugs that could be repurposed
  • Trial capacity in NHS hospitals so more families can join studies close to home
  • Natural history data on how the condition progresses, used to design trials and support approvals
  • Work with regulators and NICE on the evidence needed to bring approved treatments to patients

Organization

Duchenne UK · United Kingdom

Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1147094

Founded 2012 · Headquarters: London (Hammersmith)

UK charity funding research and trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic condition.

How they work: Duchenne UK was set up by families affected by the condition and concentrates on getting treatments into clinics faster. It funds targeted research, has invested in clinical trial capacity at NHS centers through the DMD Hub, and led Project HERCULES with industry and academic partners to build the evidence health technology assessors need when judging Duchenne treatments. It also works on access, pressing for approved therapies to be made available on the NHS.

Track record: Since its founding Duchenne UK has invested £15M in 106 research projects and enabled 574 people with Duchenne to take part in clinical trials.

Giving in the United Kingdom

Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.

19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
