Why this matters in Palestine

Long before October 2023, households in Gaza depended on a patchwork of municipal wells, small desalination plants and water piped in from Israel, because the coastal aquifer beneath the Strip is badly over-pumped and too salty to drink. The war has since destroyed or disabled much of the network of wells, pipes, pumping stations and sewage plants, and large-scale repair cannot proceed while access restrictions, recurring violence despite the October 2025 ceasefire and shortages of spare parts continue.

Families now collect water from trucks, distribution points and the desalination units that are still running. UNICEF reported in May 2026 that 82% of families were water insecure, and that shortages of chemicals, spare parts and lubricants were cutting desalination output. Without enough clean water for drinking, cooking and washing, diarrheal disease spreads quickly through crowded shelters and tent sites, and young children are the most exposed.

What your gift pays for

  • Fuel and lubricants that keep desalination units and well pumps producing water
  • Water trucking to shelters and displacement sites cut off from any working supply
  • Spare parts and treatment chemicals for desalination units, wherever they can be brought in
  • Storage tanks and jerrycans so families can safely hold a day's supply

Organization

Oxfam (Occupied Palestinian Territory) · Palestine

Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Oxfam GB) · No. 202918

Headquarters: Jerusalem

Provides emergency water supply and sanitation in Gaza, including water trucking and repairs.

How they work: Oxfam's Gaza response is carried out with Palestinian partner organizations and the local water utilities, whose staff know the network and can work where international teams cannot. Its emergency water work moves between trucking, restoring damaged wells and pipelines where conditions permit, and installing treatment and desalination equipment, with sanitation and hygiene supplies alongside. Operations depend on what is allowed into the Strip, so the mix of activities shifts with access.

Track record: From October 2023 to May 2024 Oxfam reached 120,000 people in Gaza with WASH aid, installing 5 desalination units in Rafah and 25 latrine blocks, and trucking water where allowed.

Giving in Palestine

Conflict damage to homes, water systems and children's wellbeing in Gaza is the focus of three Palestinian causes. Oxfam funds water trucking and fuel for desalination units where piped water has been damaged, the Palestine Red Crescent distributes shelter materials and blankets to families whose homes were destroyed, and the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme offers psychosocial support to children with acute trauma symptoms. A fourth, with the Palestinian Hydrology Group, funds water quality monitoring and repairs to wells and cisterns where damaged water and sanitation spread preventable disease.

4 causes are listed in Palestine, each with its own verified organization. $404,331 has been distributed to causes in Palestine since 2021.
