Why this matters in Haiti

Nearly 1.47 million people were internally displaced in Haiti as of June 2026, about one resident in eight, the International Organization for Migration reported. In Port-au-Prince the displaced population passed 300,000 after fresh violence in Cité Soleil in May, and attacks are now reaching districts where families had previously found refuge.

People who flee often leave behind birth certificates, national ID cards, property deeds and school records, or lose them when homes are looted or burned. Without those papers, adults struggle to receive money transfers, rent a room, enroll children in a new school, claim an inheritance or prove ownership of a house now held by an armed group. Courts and civil registry offices have themselves been disrupted by the violence, and families crowded into displacement sites or with relatives rarely have the money or safe transport to rebuild their records. Legal help lets them re-establish their identity and protect what they own while they rebuild somewhere safer.

What your gift pays for

  • Replacement birth certificates, identity cards and other civil documents lost in displacement
  • Lawyers' time to protect property and inheritance claims for families forced from their homes
  • Legal representation for victims of violence seeking accountability through national courts
  • Legal counseling for displaced people on which documents they need and how to obtain them

Organization

Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI) · Haiti

Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince public-interest law firm (partner of IJDH) providing free legal representation to victims of human rights violations and poor Haitians.

How they work: BAI is staffed mainly by local lawyers and describes its method as victim-centered advocacy: litigation in national courts combined with grassroots organizing and international pressure. Its lawyers take cases that clients could never afford, work with community and women's groups to identify needs, and partner with the US-based Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti, with which it pursued claims against the United Nations on behalf of cholera victims. Operational details are kept discreet for the safety of clients and staff.

Track record: BAI represented victims in the 2000 Raboteau massacre trial, which convicted 53 defendants, and in 2010 worked with survivors of sexual abuse in post-earthquake displacement camps.

Giving in Haiti

Armed gang control of neighborhoods, and the displacement it causes, links the three causes listed for Haiti. Zanmi Lasante, the Haitian arm of Partners In Health, runs oral rehydration points and chlorination during cholera outbreaks in displacement settlements. The Bureau des Avocats Internationaux gives displaced families free legal help, from replacing lost documents to protecting property claims, and the Association des Journalistes Haitiens provides security equipment and legal support to reporters covering the violence and political instability. Each partner works within an ongoing security crisis.

3 causes are listed in Haiti, each with its own verified organization. $263,797 has been distributed to causes in Haiti since 2021.
