Why this matters in the United States

Most young adults lean on family well past eighteen: a parent who co-signs a lease, a spare room after a lost job, a loan for a security deposit. Young people leaving foster care often have none of that. Many states now let them stay in extended foster care to 21, and federal Chafee funds can help with independent living costs, but the support varies widely by state, the paperwork is heavy, and young people who leave at eighteen frequently do not know what they are entitled to.

Housing is where the gap shows fastest. Landlords ask for a deposit, first month's rent, a credit history and a guarantor, and a nineteen-year-old with a part-time job and no family rarely has any of them. Youth who age out of care face high rates of homelessness, interrupted schooling and early contact with the justice system. Knowing what help exists, and having someone who has been through the system to help claim it, can prevent a crisis that is far harder to fix later.

What your gift pays for

  • Peer navigators, themselves foster care alumni, who help young people apply for independent living and housing support
  • Transition guides and toolkits covering leases, budgeting, credit and managing bills
  • Leadership training for young people with care experience who mentor peers and advise agencies
  • Outreach so young people leaving care learn what extended care and Chafee funds can offer

Organization

FosterClub · United States

US IRS EIN · No. 93-1287234

Founded 2000 · Headquarters: Seaside

National nonprofit supporting young people in and aging out of foster care.

How they work: FosterClub is run on a peer model: young people who have been in foster care help shape and deliver its work. Through its All-Star internship, alumni are trained as leaders and speakers who work with agencies, legislators and younger peers. The organization publishes practical tools such as a transition toolkit for planning the move to adulthood, and promotes a permanency pact that formalizes commitments from supportive adults. Its policy input draws directly on what young people report about the system.

Track record: FosterClub runs a Peer Navigator programme in which foster care alumni help youth access Independent Living funds, and publishes transition and housing guides.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
