Why this matters in Pakistan

Monsoon floods in Pakistan have become a recurring event rather than a rare one. In 2022 roughly a third of the country was under water at the peak, and the 2025 season killed more than 1,000 people by late September, with flash floods tearing through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab seeing its worst river flooding in decades. Rural families along the Indus and its tributaries mostly live in mud-brick katcha houses, which slump and collapse after days in standing water.

Government compensation exists but rarely covers the full cost of rebuilding, and payments can take months. Many affected households are tenant farmers or daily-wage laborers without land titles, which complicates access to formal reconstruction schemes. Families who rebuild with the same materials on the same low ground often lose their homes again in the next big flood, so the height of the plinth, the choice of materials and the design of a house matter as much as the speed of the work.

What your gift pays for

  • Raised plinths and foundations that keep floors above typical flood levels
  • Fired brick, cement and roofing for compact homes that withstand standing water
  • Wages for local masons, working alongside family members who help build
  • Drainage and sanitation around rebuilt houses to limit disease after waters recede

Organization

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan · Pakistan

Societies registration (Lahore) · No. RP/4243/L/S/90/375

Founded 1990 · Headquarters: Lahore

Rebuilds houses for flood-affected families under its flood rehabilitation programme.

How they work: Alkhidmat runs one of the country's largest volunteer networks, organized through district-level chapters, which lets it move from rescue boats and relief camps into rebuilding within the same communities. Beyond disaster response it operates health facilities, clean-water projects, orphan support and education programs, so families reached after a flood can be linked to these services as well. Funding comes largely from domestic donations, including religious giving such as zakat.

Track record: After Pakistan's 2022 monsoon floods, Alkhidmat reported 1,998 houses constructed for flood-affected families across four provinces (June 2023 report).

Giving in Pakistan

Two quite different pressures shape the Pakistan listings. Afghan refugees have lived in Pakistan for decades, and the Norwegian Refugee Council funds school places and learning materials for Afghan children in host communities. Recurring monsoon floods have repeatedly destroyed homes, and Alkhidmat Foundation, a Pakistani organization, rebuilds them as flood-resilient shelter. One cause looks to neighbors who crossed the border, the other to the country's own exposure to extreme weather.

2 causes are listed in Pakistan, each with its own verified organization. $197,535 has been distributed to causes in Pakistan since 2021.
