Funds home repair grants for households affected by increasingly frequent severe flooding events in river valley regions.
Why this matters in Germany
The July 2021 floods in the Ahr and Erft valleys killed more than 180 people across the country and destroyed whole streets of houses in a few hours. Three years later, heavy rain in June 2024 flooded towns along the Danube and its tributaries in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Scientists have linked the growing intensity of such downpours to a warming climate, and river-valley communities that once flooded once a generation now prepare for repeat events.
Insurance does not cover everyone. Cover for natural hazards such as flooding has long been optional for homeowners, and a large share of households do not have it, especially older owners and those in high-risk zones where premiums are steep. State reconstruction programs help, but they involve applications, assessments and waiting periods, and they rarely cover everything. Households in hardship, such as pensioners, single parents and tenants, often fall into the gap between what the state pays and what it takes to make a home dry, safe and furnished again.

Organization
Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) · Germany
Vereinsregister, Amtsgericht Berlin-Charlottenburg · No. 95 VR 590 Nz
Founded 1921 · Headquarters: Berlin
Paid household financial aid (DRK-Finanzhilfen) for repair and recovery after the 2021 floods.
How they work: The German Red Cross is organized as a federation of regional and district associations, so flood recovery is delivered largely by local branches that know the affected towns. After a disaster, they combine emergency relief with financial aid paid to households on application, assessed for need and coordinated with state reconstruction funds so that money tops up rather than duplicates public support. Branches also run psychosocial support for affected residents and advice services that guide people through recovery paperwork.
Track record: After the July 2021 floods the DRK received 70 million euros for flood areas, paid cash aid to victims and topped up state aid so hardship cases could replace appliances and furniture.

Giving in Germany
Labor shortages and migration tie together much of the German list. Language-bridging courses help refugee and migrant youth enter the Ausbildung vocational system, while other funds train new elder-care workers and subsidize home-care visits as formal care places become harder to secure. The range extends to asylum legal aid through PRO ASYL, winter shelter for an estimated 531,600 homeless people, flood repair grants in river valleys, diagnostic guidance for people with rare diseases and string instrument loans for gifted young musicians. Partners include welfare federations such as Caritas and Diakonie alongside the German Red Cross.
9 causes are listed in Germany, each with its own verified organization. $854,499 has been distributed to causes in Germany since 2021.
