Supports flood preparedness in flood-prone regions, from the 112 early-warning system to stream-bed clearing, mapping of risk sites and evacuation drills.
Why this matters in Greece
Flash floods kill in places that look harmless most of the year. In November 2017, a torrent through Mandra, west of Athens, claimed 24 lives after a dry stream bed filled in minutes. In September 2023, Storm Daniel dumped extreme rainfall on Thessaly and turned the plain around Larissa and Karditsa into a lake, flooding villages and farmland across the region.
Much of the risk is built in. Over decades, homes, roads and businesses went up on or beside stream beds, culverts were narrowed, and drains were left to clog with debris and silt. Responsibility for cleaning streams and maintaining drainage sits with regions and municipalities that often lack staff and budget. At the same time, warnings only work if people receive them in time and know what to do. Clearer stream beds, working drains and well-rehearsed alerts give residents minutes that can decide whether a flood becomes a tragedy.
What your gift pays for
- Clearing debris and vegetation from stream beds and storm drains before the wet season
- Mapping of flood-prone sites so local authorities can target maintenance and planning
- Evacuation drills and public information on how to respond to flood alerts
- Training for regional and municipal civil protection staff who run operations during severe weather
Organization
General Secretariat for Civil Protection (Greece) · Greece
Government body
Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Athens
Runs the 112 early-warning system and orders flood preparedness measures in at-risk areas.
How they work: The General Secretariat coordinates civil protection nationally, setting policy and directing regional and municipal authorities, which carry out much of the practical work on the ground. It operates the 112 emergency alert system, which sends warnings directly to mobile phones in an affected area and has been in use since 2020. Before each wet season it issues instructions on stream clearing, drainage, evacuation planning and drills, and it coordinates operational centers during severe weather events.
Track record: Ahead of winter 2026-27 the Secretariat ordered authorities to clear stream beds and storm drains, map flood-prone sites, update evacuation plans and hold flood-response drills.

Giving in Greece
Climate-related disasters account for every Greek cause listed. Two respond to wildfire seasons that have grown more severe over the past decade, funding temporary shelter and relief supplies for rural households, and firebreak maintenance with volunteer forest protection groups. Two address flooding, one with home repair grants and the other with early warning, stream-bed clearing and evacuation drills. Partners combine the Hellenic Red Cross and WWF Greece with national civil protection authorities, covering both recovery and prevention.
