First Generation Scholars Fund

United States

Donate crypto to this education cause in the United States. We accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT and six other coins, with no platform fee.

Funds scholarships and support for Hispanic college students, many the first in their families to attend, closing funding gaps that could otherwise force a student to drop out mid-degree.

Why this matters in the United States

First-generation students start college without a parent who has completed a degree, which often means no one at home who has filled in a FAFSA, compared aid offers or appealed a financial aid decision. They are more likely to come from low-income households and to work long hours alongside classes, and they complete degrees at lower rates than peers whose parents graduated.

The shortfall that ends a degree is often modest: a grant reduced in the second year, a jump in housing costs, a parent losing a job. Pell Grants have not kept pace with the rising cost of attendance, and students without family savings or a cosigner have few options beyond expensive private loans. Filling the gap at the right moment keeps a student on track to graduate, rather than stopping out with debt and no credential.

What your gift pays for

  • Scholarship awards applied to tuition, fees and other costs of attendance not met by financial aid
  • Mentoring and career coaching that help scholars stay enrolled and plan their next step
  • Internship and job connections through the organization's corporate and university partners
  • College and financial aid workshops for high school students and their parents

Organization

Hispanic Scholarship Fund · United States

US IRS EIN · No. 52-1051044

Founded 1975 · Headquarters: Los Angeles

National nonprofit awarding college scholarships, largely to first-generation Latino students.

How they work: The Hispanic Scholarship Fund selects scholars through an annual application that weighs both merit and financial need, then pairs the award with ongoing support. Its scholar services include mentoring, career guidance, internship and job connections and leadership conferences. HSF also runs programs for high school students and their parents on college applications and financial aid, so families meet the process before costs become a crisis. Many awards are funded by corporate and foundation partners.

Track record: Founded in 1975, HSF had awarded over $700 million in scholarships to Latino students by 2022 and selects around 10,000 scholars each year.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
