Funds food support for low-income families still recovering from the economic crisis.
Why this matters in Sri Lanka
Poverty stood at 24.5 percent in 2024, about twice the 2019 level, the World Bank reported in 2025. The 2022 economic crisis brought fuel queues and shortages of medicine and cooking gas, and food prices more than doubled between 2021 and 2024. Inflation has since eased and the economy is growing again, but prices have not fallen back, and earnings for many casual workers, estate laborers and small farmers have not caught up.
Families coped by eating less and cheaper food, borrowing and cutting spending on schooling and health, and the World Bank has flagged a rise in stunting and malnutrition among children. Recovery has been uneven: plantation communities in the hill country, households in the former conflict areas of the north and east, and rural families living on daily wages remain the most exposed. Government welfare was reorganized under the Aswesuma program, but targeted cash payments alone rarely cover a family's diet while food costs stay this high.

Its network also includes district centers and specialized units for microfinance, early childhood education and disaster relief.
