Funds rent-arrears mediation shown to prevent evictions before they happen, addressing one driver of homelessness, which remains far above its 2009 level.
Why this matters in the Netherlands
Homelessness in the Netherlands has grown markedly since 2009, and its profile has widened beyond single men with addiction problems to include young people, migrants and families with children. Many evictions in the Dutch rental sector follow rent arrears, and arrears are usually a symptom of wider debt: health insurance premiums, energy bills and fines that pile up after a job loss, separation or illness.
Dutch rules have shifted toward early intervention. Since 2021, landlords, energy suppliers, water companies and health insurers have been required to report payment arrears to municipalities early, and municipalities must offer help. In practice, reaching a family and agreeing a payment plan before a landlord goes to court depends on someone with time to visit, sort through letters and negotiate. For children, an eviction can mean a change of school, a stay in emergency shelter and lasting disruption, so preventing it costs far less, in money and in harm, than rehousing a family later.
What your gift pays for

- Home visits by support workers who help families sort through bills and letters
- Budget coaching that helps households keep up with rent once a plan is agreed
- Coordination with municipal debt services so families get formal debt relief where needed
Organization
Leger des Heils · Netherlands
Kamer van Koophandel KvK (Stichting Leger des Heils Fondsenwerving) · No. 41208153
Founded 1887 · Headquarters: Almere
Salvation Army in the Netherlands, providing homelessness shelter and support services and working on debt problems that trap people in homelessness.
How they work: Leger des Heils is a Christian organization working alongside Dutch municipalities, which commission and fund much of its social care. Beyond shelters, its teams provide ambulant support in people's own homes: workers visit families, help stabilize their finances and coordinate with debt services and landlords so a crisis does not end in eviction. It also runs day programs, supported housing and services for people with complex needs.
Track record: Its 2025 Noordoost annual report describes ambulant housing support for families in crisis under the 'Zwolse aanpak', helping families stay in their homes; no prevention figures given.

Giving in the Netherlands
Water, nature and housing security run through the Dutch causes. With a large share of the country below sea level, restored coastal wetlands serve as flood defense as well as habitat, and unused city land becomes pollinator corridors for declining bee populations. Social causes include adult literacy and Dutch-language classes for newcomers, companionship and practical support that help seniors keep living at home, and rent-arrears mediation by Leger des Heils that heads off evictions. Partners also include Natuurmonumenten and Nationaal Ouderenfonds.
5 causes are listed in the Netherlands, each with its own verified organization. $356,435 has been distributed to causes in the Netherlands since 2021.
