Why this matters worldwide

Journalists who flee their countries usually leave with little warning and few resources. They may have reported on corruption, organized crime, armed conflict or a government's own abuses, and the threat behind their departure ranges from imminent arrest to credible plans to kill them. Once abroad, they face costly visa and asylum procedures, legal status that can take years to settle, and often no right to work in the meantime.

Exile does not always bring safety. Governments increasingly pursue critics across borders through in-absentia trials, abusive Interpol notices, pressure on family members at home, digital surveillance and online harassment. Freelancers and staff of small outlets are especially exposed because no employer pays for relocation or lawyers. Without help in the first weeks and months, many journalists stop reporting altogether, and the stories they covered go untold. Support at that stage lets experienced reporters stay safe and keep working.

Organization

Committee to Protect Journalists · Global

US IRS EIN · No. 13-3081500

Founded 1981 · Headquarters: New York City

International press freedom NGO whose emergencies program provides assistance, including support for relocation, to journalists forced into exile.

How they work: CPJ's assistance starts with verification: staff confirm that a journalist is at risk because of their work before support is arranged. Help can include small grants toward relocation, medical or legal costs, referrals to partner organizations that provide visas, shelter or fellowships, and advice on physical and digital safety. CPJ also documents attacks on the press, publishes an annual census of imprisoned journalists, and raises transnational repression cases with governments and international bodies.

Track record: In 2025, CPJ supported 25 exiled journalists facing active transnational repression, most of them from Iran and Azerbaijan.

Giving beyond borders

Journalists sometimes have to leave their own countries because of threats tied to their reporting, and exile brings its own costs and legal problems. This global cause, through the Committee to Protect Journalists, funds relocation and legal support for reporters forced to flee. Because it is not tied to a single country, it sits under Global and covers cases wherever press freedom is under threat and journalists can no longer safely stay home.
