Funds emergency and transitional shelter beds in cities where affordable housing has not kept pace with rising rents, prioritizing families with children.
Why this matters in the United States
Families with children are among the hardest groups to shelter. Many single-adult shelters cannot take a father and his teenage son together, motel stays are expensive, and waiting lists for housing vouchers in high-cost cities can run for years. When a lease ends or an eviction goes through, parents often double up with relatives, sleep in cars, or split the family to keep everyone under a roof.
Underneath is a shortage of rental housing that low-wage workers can afford. Rents in many metro areas have risen faster than wages for more than a decade, so one missed paycheck or a medical bill can tip a working household into homelessness. Children bear much of the cost: changing schools, missed lessons and the stress of instability. Short emergency stays, followed by help finding and keeping a new home, give families a way back before homelessness becomes long-term.

Organization
Family Promise · United States
US IRS EIN (Family Promise of Lawrence Inc) · No. 26-2709610
Founded 1988 · Headquarters: Summit
National network of local affiliates providing shelter and transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness.
How they work: Family Promise grew out of the Interfaith Hospitality Network model, in which local congregations take turns hosting homeless families overnight in their buildings while volunteers cook meals and keep them company. During the day, families use the affiliate's day center and work with a case manager on employment, housing and schooling. Many affiliates now also run their own shelter or apartment programs, and the network has added prevention and diversion work to help families keep their housing before they lose it.
Track record: Since 1988 Family Promise's 200+ affiliates in 42 states have provided shelter and services to more than 700,000 people, mostly children, in homeless and at-risk families.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
