Why this matters in Germany

An aging population means the number of people officially assessed as needing long-term care has grown sharply over the past decade, and most are looked after at home by relatives with help from home-care services. At the same time, the baby-boomer generation of nurses and care assistants is moving into retirement. Care homes and home-care services report turning away new clients or closing beds for lack of staff, and rural districts in the east, where the population is oldest, feel the gap most.

Since 2020, nursing training has been generalist, combining hospital, pediatric and elder care in a three-year program for which trainees receive a salary from their employer. Shorter assistant-level courses offer a faster route in, but career changers, people from migrant backgrounds and nurses trained abroad often face language hurdles, adaptation courses and living costs while they qualify. Stipends that cover rent, childcare or language classes during training keep candidates from dropping out before they reach the wards where they are needed.

What your gift pays for

  • Training stipends that help career changers cover living costs while qualifying in elder care
  • German language courses for nurses trained abroad who are awaiting recognition of their qualifications
  • Mentoring and supervision for trainees on placement in care homes and home-care services
  • Childcare costs for trainees with young children, so they can attend classes and shifts

Organization

Deutscher Caritasverband · Germany

Vereinsregister, Amtsgericht Freiburg · No. VR 570

Founded 1897 · Headquarters: Freiburg

Its member providers run nursing and elder-care training, including recruiting trainees from abroad.

How they work: Deutscher Caritasverband is the federation of the Catholic Church's social services, made up of diocesan Caritas associations and a large number of member organizations. Locally these run residential care homes, home-care stations and nursing schools, so training and employment sit within the same network. Member providers take trainees through the generalist nursing program, offer assistant-level courses and help nurses recruited from abroad with language learning and integration. At federal level the association advocates on care policy and staffing.

Track record: Caritasverband Bremen is a partner in the Bremen Centre for Nursing Education, which began generalist nursing training covering elder care in April 2020.

Giving in Germany

Labor shortages and migration tie together much of the German list. Language-bridging courses help refugee and migrant youth enter the Ausbildung vocational system, while other funds train new elder-care workers and subsidize home-care visits as formal care places become harder to secure. The range extends to asylum legal aid through PRO ASYL, winter shelter for an estimated 531,600 homeless people, flood repair grants in river valleys, diagnostic guidance for people with rare diseases and string instrument loans for gifted young musicians. Partners include welfare federations such as Caritas and Diakonie alongside the German Red Cross.
