Why this matters in Venezuela

A full-time job on Venezuela's official minimum wage no longer covers food for anyone. The base wage has stayed at 130 bolivares a month since March 2022, worth well under one US dollar, while the independent research center Cendas-FVM priced a family's monthly food basket at roughly $730 in April 2026. A May 2026 increase raised total minimum income to about $240, paid mostly as bonuses rather than wages, which still covers about a third of that basket, and households with no relatives abroad sending money are the most exposed.

Children show the effects first. Parents shrink portions, swap protein for starch and skip meals so younger children can eat, and slowed growth and acute malnutrition follow. State food distribution arrives irregularly and does not reach every household. Church networks reach poor urban neighborhoods and rural communities where other aid is scarce, and a predictable monthly basket lets a family plan ahead rather than lurch from one shortfall to the next.

What your gift pays for

  • Monthly baskets of rice, beans, flour, cooking oil and other staples for households below the wage line
  • Nutritional screening of young children so the most at-risk families are prioritized
  • Supplementary nutrition for children identified as malnourished, continued until they regain healthy weight
  • Transport of supplies from regional warehouses to parish distribution points

Organization

Caritas Venezuela · Venezuela

Church-based humanitarian programme against hunger and child malnutrition.

How they work: Caritas Venezuela works through the country's dioceses and parishes, so distribution relies on local volunteers who know which households are struggling. Its SAMAN program weighs and measures children in poor communities, enrolls those found to be malnourished, and follows their recovery over time. The monitoring data has also been used to report publicly on child nutrition at a time when official figures were scarce, giving the church network an evidence base for where to direct food.

Track record: Through its SAMAN nutrition monitoring programme, Caritas Venezuela assessed more than 15,000 children under five and enrolled over 10,000 for nutritional support.

Giving in Venezuela

Prolonged economic crisis is the context for both Venezuelan causes. Caritas Venezuela delivers monthly food baskets to households where hyperinflation has left a full-time minimum wage unable to cover basic groceries. Aliadas en Cadena provides business, digital and life-skills training to women who support their families through the crisis. One meets immediate needs while the other helps build an income, and both partners are Venezuelan organizations working inside the country.

2 causes are listed in Venezuela, each with its own verified organization. $242,912 has been distributed to causes in Venezuela since 2021.
