Funds earthquake-resistant reconstruction in High Atlas mountain villages still recovering from the 2023 earthquake, through the state agency that steers the region's rebuilding program.
Why this matters in Morocco
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake of September 2023 killed nearly 3,000 people and struck hardest in remote High Atlas villages, where most houses were built by their owners from rammed earth, stone and timber. These materials are cheap and suit the mountain climate, but unreinforced walls crumble when the ground shakes. Families in Al Haouz, Chichaoua and Taroudant provinces lost homes that had stood for generations, and the roads that reach them run along steep valleys that rockfalls can close for days.
State reconstruction aid has paid for tens of thousands of houses: by September 2025, the agency's director general reported 51,154 homes built or rehabilitated, over 92 percent of the sites launched. That still leaves households whose repairs were partial, or whose rebuilt homes lack the bracing, ring beams or foundation work that would help them ride out the next tremor. Most of these families farm small terraced plots and earn little cash, so paying a mason for reinforcement beyond the basic rebuild is out of reach.
What your gift pays for
- Ring beams, reinforced corners and tie elements added to earth and stone homes rebuilt after the quake
- Training for local masons in earthquake-resistant techniques suited to traditional High Atlas materials
- Foundation and retaining-wall work for houses on steep or rockfall-prone slopes
- Transport of cement, steel and timber to villages reachable only by mountain tracks
Organization
Agence de Développement du Haut Atlas (ADHA) · Morocco
Government body
Founded 2023 · Headquarters: Al Haouz province
State agency steering the Al Haouz post-earthquake reconstruction and rehabilitation programme.
How they work: ADHA was created on royal instruction to supervise the reconstruction program and coordinate economic and social projects across the quake zone. Its mandate asks that rebuilding respect local heritage, traditions and ways of life, and take account of the environment, rather than imposing standard urban housing. The agency reports on progress, spending and impact to an interministerial commission chaired by the head of government, and its remit reaches beyond housing into schools, health, farming, crafts and tourism.
Track record: Activated in March 2025, the agency began its first projects in the earthquake-affected Al Haouz region and held its first strategic orientation council.

Giving in Morocco
The 2023 High Atlas earthquake is the reason for all three Moroccan causes. Mountain villages are still recovering, and the funds cover different stages: temporary shelter and winter support for households still displaced, rebuilding grants for those who lost homes, and earthquake-resistant rebuilding so houses can better withstand future earthquakes. The Moroccan Red Crescent works alongside the Agence de Developpement du Haut Atlas and the national reconstruction program.
3 causes are listed in Morocco, each with its own verified organization. $347,182 has been distributed to causes in Morocco since 2021.
