Funds temporary shelter and winter support for households in mountain villages still displaced since the 2023 High Atlas earthquake.
Why this matters in Morocco
After the September 2023 earthquake, many families in the High Atlas were left with houses that were still standing but cracked, leaning or missing walls. Deciding whether such a house is safe to sleep in is not something a household can judge by eye, and aftershocks made the question urgent. Some families moved back into damaged rooms too soon; others stayed out of sound buildings for fear of collapse.
Mountain villages, or douars, are scattered across steep valleys, and some can be reached only by narrow tracks that rockfalls and snow can close. Engineers and inspectors are concentrated in towns and were stretched across a very large area. Meanwhile, tents and temporary units have to protect families, including older people and young children, through freezing winters and hot summers. Sturdier temporary shelter and winter supplies for those whose homes cannot be used protect people while longer-term rebuilding moves at its own pace.

Organization
Moroccan Red Crescent · Morocco
Founded 1957 · Headquarters: Rabat
Has assisted tens of thousands of Al Haouz earthquake-affected people including shelter and winter support.
How they work: The Moroccan Red Crescent is the country's national Red Cross and Red Crescent society and acts as an auxiliary to the public authorities in emergencies. Its response to the earthquake ran through provincial committees and local volunteers who already knew the villages, and was backed by an International Federation emergency appeal. Volunteers distributed tents, blankets and winter supplies, gave first aid and psychosocial support, and helped families separated by the disaster restore contact, before moving on to longer-term shelter support.
Track record: In the 18 months after the 2023 Al Haouz earthquake it assisted 41,404 people in 261 villages, setting up 1,756 tents and 877 temporary shelter units.

Giving in Morocco
The 2023 High Atlas earthquake is the reason for all three Moroccan causes. Mountain villages are still recovering, and the funds cover different stages: temporary shelter and winter support for households still displaced, rebuilding grants for those who lost homes, and earthquake-resistant rebuilding so houses can better withstand future earthquakes. The Moroccan Red Crescent works alongside the Agence de Developpement du Haut Atlas and the national reconstruction program.
3 causes are listed in Morocco, each with its own verified organization. $347,182 has been distributed to causes in Morocco since 2021.
