Funds well rehabilitation in villages where drought has affected traditional water sources.
Why this matters in Afghanistan
A UNDP report released in May 2026 found that the share of Afghan households reporting drought rose from 34 percent in 2024 to 64 percent in 2025, and that reports of non-functional or dried-up water points roughly tripled over the same period. In the worst-affected belt, from the west to Badakhshan in the northeast, 92 percent of households reported drought impacts. Shallow hand-dug wells and karez channels, which villages have relied on for generations, are among the first sources to fail as the water table drops.
When a village well dries, women and children usually walk farther for water, sometimes to unprotected sources that spread diarrheal disease. Public investment in rural water collapsed after 2021, when most development funding was suspended, and humanitarian budgets have since been cut further. Rehabilitating an existing well by deepening it, relining it or fitting a new pump is often the fastest and cheapest way to restore supply.
What your gift pays for
- Deepening and relining dried-up wells so they reach the lowered water table
- Replacement handpumps, pipes and spare parts for broken village water points
- Water-quality testing and disinfection after each well is rehabilitated and before people drink from it
- Training for village caretakers who maintain pumps and organize repairs
Organization
DACAAR (Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees) · Afghanistan
Afghanistan Ministry of Economy NGO registration (Danish CVR: 29902488) · No. 24
Founded 1984 · Headquarters: Kabul
Long-running NGO in Afghanistan delivering rural water supply and water-point rehabilitation, with recently completed water access projects.
How they work: DACAAR combines engineering with community management: villages help choose sites and contribute labor, and local caretakers are trained to look after pumps after handover. It has long run a groundwater monitoring network, whose data informs where and how deep to drill, and it pairs new and repaired water points with hygiene education.
Track record: DACAAR's Emergency WASH and Rural Water Supply programmes cover all 34 provinces of Afghanistan; about 12 million Afghans have benefited from its work since 1984.

Giving in Afghanistan
Restrictions on women and girls shape most of what is listed for Afghanistan. Two causes support community-run learning for girls barred from secondary school and vocational training through local women's organizations for women shut out of most public employment. The others fund trained birth attendants in provinces where maternal mortality remains high and well rehabilitation in villages affected by drought. Partners include the Afghan Institute of Learning, the Afghan Midwives Association and DACAAR, organizations with long experience working inside the country.
4 causes are listed in Afghanistan, each with its own verified organization. $328,840 has been distributed to causes in Afghanistan since 2021.
