Why this matters in Zimbabwe

The 2023-24 rains stopped in February, just as maize was flowering, and most of Zimbabwe went more than 30 days without rain. Fields failed partially or completely across much of the country, the government declared a national drought disaster in April 2024, and the UN estimated that about 6 million people would face food insecurity during the 2024-25 lean season. Households that lost a harvest often had no seed left to plant the next year.

Communal-land farmers in the south and west, where rainfall is lowest, have long planted maize because markets and diets favor it, even though it copes poorly with dry spells. Small grains such as sorghum and millet, and legumes such as cowpeas, tolerate drought far better, but quality seed is hard to find in rural shops. Small-scale irrigation, even a garden fed by a borehole or a drip kit, gives a family something to harvest when rain-fed crops fail.

What your gift pays for

  • Certified small-grain and legume seed, including sorghum, pearl millet and cowpeas, for the next planting season
  • Drip kits, pipes and pumps for small irrigated gardens near reliable water
  • Training on planting dates, seed selection and soil moisture conservation
  • Hermetic storage bags that protect harvested grain from weevils and other storage pests

Organization

US IRS EIN (parent: Catholic Relief Services, Baltimore) · No. 13-5563422

Founded 1989

Provides drought-resistant small-grain seed and training to Zimbabwean farmers, working with Caritas dioceses.

How they work: CRS works in the country mainly through local partners, chiefly Catholic diocesan development commissions linked to Caritas. It has used seed fairs and vouchers so farmers can choose varieties from local traders rather than receive a standard package. Its agriculture programs train farmers in groups and combine seed with conservation agriculture and water harvesting. CRS also promotes community savings and internal lending groups, which help households build the savings to buy their own inputs in later seasons.

Track record: CRS has provided Zimbabwean farmers with training and drought-resistant seeds such as sorghum, millet and cowpeas so they can harvest even during droughts.

Giving in Zimbabwe

Failed harvests during drought years hit Zimbabwe's farming households hard, since many depend on rain-fed crops for both food and income. Catholic Relief Services uses this fund for drought-tolerant seed and small-scale irrigation, so families can replant and rely less on rainfall. At present this is the only Zimbabwean cause on the site. Additional causes may appear as more partners in the country are vetted.

This is currently the only cause we list in Zimbabwe. $79,984 has been distributed to causes in Zimbabwe since 2021.
