Funds outpatient treatment for children under five with acute malnutrition in drought-affected districts.
Why this matters in Somalia
Below-average rains from October to December 2025 were followed by the long dry season, and the southern cereal harvest came in more than 80% below its long-term average. When crops fail and livestock weaken, families in agropastoral districts cut meals, sell animals and move toward towns and displacement camps, where water is scarce and diseases such as cholera and measles spread quickly. Young children are the first to show the damage.
The IPC analysis published in February 2026 projected about 1.84 million children under five acutely malnourished during the year, nearly half a million of them severely. Most severely malnourished children without medical complications can recover at home on therapeutic food, with weekly checks at an outpatient site. The obstacle is coverage: sites need steady supplies and staff, and many families live far from one. Treating children early, before infection or dehydration sets in, prevents hospital admissions that are harder to provide and far more dangerous for the child.
What your gift pays for
- Ready-to-use therapeutic food for children treated at home under weekly outpatient supervision
- Upper-arm measurement screening so community workers can identify malnourished children early
- Routine medicines given alongside nutrition treatment, such as antibiotics, deworming tablets and vitamin A
- Staff costs and transport for outpatient sites serving families displaced by drought

Treats children for severe acute malnutrition in drought-affected areas.
How they work: Save the Children's nutrition work in Somalia follows the community-based model used across the Horn of Africa. Outreach workers and volunteers screen children by measuring the upper arm and checking for swelling, then refer them for care. Children without complications are enrolled in outpatient programs and take therapeutic food home, while those with medical complications are admitted to stabilization centers. Nutrition treatment is usually combined with health, water and hygiene services so the causes of illness are addressed too.
Track record: Its Somalia programmes admitted 1,405 children with severe acute malnutrition and complications in January-June 2026, up 177% from 507 a year earlier.

Giving in Somalia
Drought and conflict have pushed many Somali families into displacement camps, and both causes listed respond to the consequences. Save the Children provides outpatient treatment for children under five with acute malnutrition in drought-affected districts. The Norwegian Refugee Council trucks water and builds latrines in camps for displaced families. Nutrition and safe water are closely linked in these settings, since poor sanitation raises the risk of illness among children who are already malnourished.
