Funds temporary classrooms for children whose families have been displaced by drought-driven migration.
Why this matters in Ethiopia
Failed rainy seasons from late 2020 into 2023 brought the worst drought in four decades to the Somali region and southern Oromia, including Borena. Pastoralist families lost most of their livestock, and many moved to displacement sites near towns and water points to reach food aid; floods in late 2023 then displaced more. Children arriving at these sites rarely find a school. The nearest government school may be full or far away, and families on the move do not stay long enough to enroll.
Schooling in the pastoralist lowlands was thin even before the drought, with long distances between schools and few teachers willing to work in remote areas. Hunger makes concentration hard and pushes children into work: herding the remaining animals, fetching water or selling small goods. Girls are more likely to be withdrawn, and child marriage tends to rise when families lose income. A temporary classroom inside or beside a displacement site keeps children learning and gives parents a reason to keep them enrolled.

Organization
Save the Children Ethiopia · Ethiopia
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Save the Children International) · No. 1076822
Founded 2012 · Headquarters: Addis Ababa
Runs education-in-emergencies programmes for displaced children in Ethiopia, including Education Cannot Wait multi-year work in Somali region.
How they work: Save the Children works alongside Ethiopia's regional education bureaus, setting up temporary learning spaces that follow the national curriculum and training teachers recruited locally. It usually combines classroom support with child protection and psychosocial activities, and with school meals where funding allows, so that children who have lost homes and herds can settle into learning. The aim is to move children into permanent government schools as conditions allow.
Track record: In 2016 Save the Children planned education support for refugee children and drought-affected schools in Ethiopia benefitting more than 125,000 students.

Giving in Ethiopia
Drought is the single driver behind all three Ethiopian causes. Consecutive failed rainy seasons have dried up traditional water sources, pushed families to migrate and left young children short of food, so the funds respond with borehole drilling and repair, temporary classrooms for displaced children, and supplementary feeding. Save the Children Ethiopia partners on the schooling and nutrition work, and WaterAid Ethiopia on water. Together they address the immediate effects of repeated drought on rural households.
3 causes are listed in Ethiopia, each with its own verified organization. $284,431 has been distributed to causes in Ethiopia since 2021.
