Why this matters in the United States

Emergency shelter is often the only safe option for a survivor fleeing an abuser who knows where she lives and works. Shelters offer a confidential location, food, advocacy and help planning what comes next, and they take children in alongside their parent. Many are run by small local nonprofits whose budgets depend on a mix of federal grants, state funds and private gifts.

Demand regularly outstrips beds. Rents have risen sharply across much of the country, so families stay in shelter longer because there is nowhere affordable to move on to, and each extended stay means another family turned away. Federal funding through the Victims of Crime Act has fallen in recent years as deposits into the Crime Victims Fund dropped, forcing programs to cut staff and services. When a shelter is full, survivors may return to the abuser, sleep in cars or on friends' couches, or enter general homeless shelters that cannot keep their location confidential.

What your gift pays for

  • The annual one-day census that counts survivors served and requests turned away by local programs
  • Training and technical help for local shelters and advocates, including on technology safety
  • Policy work on federal funding streams such as the Victims of Crime Act that pay for shelter services
  • Support for state coalitions that connect and strengthen local domestic violence programs

Organization

National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) · United States

IRS (EIN) · No. 52-1973408

Founded 1990 · Headquarters: Washington, D.C.

National network of DV programmes that tracks and advocates for shelter capacity and unmet requests.

How they work: NNEDV does not run shelters itself. It is a membership organization of state and territorial domestic violence coalitions, which in turn represent local programs, and it works on national policy, funding and training. Each year it conducts a one-day census of services that produces the unmet-requests data local programs use to make their case. Its Safety Net project trains advocates on technology safety, including stalkerware and location tracking.

Track record: NNEDV's 20th Domestic Violence Counts census found 1,707 programs served 84,146 survivors on 10 Sept 2025, while 13,018 requests went unmet, 58% for shelter and housing.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
