Why this matters in the United States

Civil protection orders are among the most direct legal tools a survivor of domestic violence has: a court order requiring an abuser to stay away, leave a shared home or surrender firearms, and in many states one that can settle temporary custody and support. Yet these hearings are civil cases, so there is no constitutional right to a lawyer, and public defenders represent people accused of crimes, not survivors seeking orders. Legal aid offices that take these cases are funded far below demand and often turn applicants away.

Survivors who appear alone may face abusers who have counsel, must present evidence under procedural rules they do not know, and can lose orders a lawyer would have won. Mistakes at this stage can follow a family for years, especially in custody decisions, and overturning them on appeal requires specialized lawyers few survivors can afford. Research on protection-order hearings has found that survivors with a lawyer are considerably more likely to obtain an order.

What your gift pays for

  • Attorney supervision of appeals against court decisions that left survivors or their children unprotected
  • Court transcripts and filing costs that appeals require and survivors often cannot pay
  • Training for volunteer lawyers on domestic violence dynamics, evidence and trauma
  • Amicus briefs in cases that can set precedent for how courts treat evidence of abuse

Organization

DV LEAP (Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project) · United States

US IRS (EIN) · No. 20-1076297

Founded 2003 · Headquarters: Washington, DC

Provides legal representation and advocacy for domestic violence survivors (now a project of Volare).

How they work: DV LEAP focuses on appeals and high-impact cases rather than first-time hearings. It takes on cases where trial courts have ruled against survivors, often in custody disputes, and recruits pro bono attorneys from law firms who litigate under its supervision. It files amicus briefs in state and federal appellate courts, and trains judges, lawyers and advocates on abuse, coercive control and child safety, with the aim of changing the precedents trial courts follow.

Track record: Founded in 2003 by Joan Meier, DV LEAP provides pro bono appellate advocacy for domestic violence survivors, challenges unjust trial outcomes and trains lawyers and judges.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
