Funds water trucking and latrine construction in camps for families displaced by drought and conflict.
Why this matters in Somalia
Drought has repeatedly wiped out herds and harvests across south-central Somalia, while fighting involving government forces, clan militias and al-Shabaab drives families from their villages. Many end up in informal settlements on the edges of towns such as Mogadishu, Baidoa and Kismayo. In Mogadishu alone, more than 1.1 million people were living in displacement sites by mid-2025, according to UN OCHA data.
Most sites sit on private land, with shelters of sticks, cloth and plastic sheeting, and residents live under the threat of eviction. Landowners and the gatekeepers who control many sites often resist permanent infrastructure, so piped water and proper latrines are rare. Families buy water from vendors or walk to distant points, and open defecation in crowded sites spreads cholera and acute watery diarrhea, which break out in Somalia most years. Trucked water and well-built latrines are the fastest way to cut that risk.
What your gift pays for
- Water trucking to sites with no nearby borehole, chlorinated at the point of delivery
- Latrine construction with lockable doors and lighting, sited with input from women living in the settlement
- Handwashing stations, soap and hygiene kits distributed alongside new latrines
- Desludging and repair of existing latrines so they remain usable as settlements grow
Organization
Norwegian Refugee Council (Somalia) · Somalia
Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Stiftelsen Flyktninghjelpen / NRC) · No. 977538319
Founded 2004 · Headquarters: Mogadishu
NRC operates in Somalia providing WASH, shelter and other assistance to displaced people, including in IDP settlements.
How they work: NRC delivers WASH in Somalia alongside shelter, education, camp management and legal assistance, which lets it tackle problems that block water projects, such as eviction threats and land tenure disputes. Its information, counselling and legal assistance teams help displaced families secure written tenure agreements with landowners. In settlements it combines short-term water trucking and cash for water with longer-term boreholes and latrines, working through community committees and local authorities.
Track record: In 2024 NRC's Somalia WASH programme reached 200,776 people (52% female) with water, sanitation and hygiene support, incl. boreholes, latrines and cash for water.

Giving in Somalia
Drought and conflict have pushed many Somali families into displacement camps, and both causes listed respond to the consequences. Save the Children provides outpatient treatment for children under five with acute malnutrition in drought-affected districts. The Norwegian Refugee Council trucks water and builds latrines in camps for displaced families. Nutrition and safe water are closely linked in these settings, since poor sanitation raises the risk of illness among children who are already malnourished.
2 causes are listed in Somalia, each with its own verified organization. $204,448 has been distributed to causes in Somalia since 2021.
