Funds food distribution for refugee and displaced populations hosted in camps near the Horn of Africa migration route.
Why this matters in Djibouti
Refugees from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Yemen make up the camp populations, many of them settled for years. Ali Addeh and Holl Holl lie in the arid south near the Ethiopian and Somali borders, while Markazi, near Obock on the northern coast, opened for Yemenis fleeing the war across the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. The country is also a transit point on the eastern migration route, where Ethiopian and Somali migrants cross toward Yemen and the Gulf.
The land offers almost nothing to farm. With very little arable land, the country imports nearly all its food, so prices follow global markets and shipping costs. Refugees have few ways to earn an income, and extreme summer heat makes outdoor work dangerous. Most camp households rely on monthly food rations and cash transfers, and any funding shortfall translates directly into smaller rations. Steady support keeps distributions full and on schedule.
What your gift pays for
- Monthly rations of cereals, pulses, oil and salt for refugee households
- Cash transfers that let families buy fresh food in local markets
- Specialized nutritious foods for young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Transport and storage of food for camps in both the south and the north
Organization
World Food Programme (WFP) Djibouti · Djibouti
UN agency
Founded 1978
Provides food assistance to refugees in Djibouti's camps (Ali Addeh, Holl Holl, Markazi).
How they work: WFP delivers a mix of in-kind food and cash-based transfers to registered refugees, working with the UN refugee agency and the national refugee office, ONARS, which handle registration and camp administration. Alongside general distributions it runs nutrition programs for young children and mothers. The country office also uses the port as a logistics hub for moving humanitarian supplies into neighboring countries, including Ethiopia.
Track record: In June 2023 WFP provided 166 MT of food to 24,567 refugees in Ali Addeh, Holl Holl and Markazi camps, plus USD 157,000 in cash-based transfers.

Giving in Djibouti
Positioned on the Horn of Africa migration route, Djibouti hosts refugees and displaced people in camps, and the World Food Programme distributes food to them through one of the two causes listed. The other works with the national malaria program on indoor residual spraying and rapid diagnostic tests, in one of six countries carrying most of the region's malaria transmission. Together they cover two pressures on a small country at the crossroads of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
2 causes are listed in Djibouti, each with its own verified organization. $226,616 has been distributed to causes in Djibouti since 2021.
