Funds community-based learning circles for displaced children, in a country with one of the world's largest long-running internal displacement crises from land conflict.
Why this matters in Colombia
Colombia's official victims registry lists more than 8 million people forcibly displaced by armed conflict over the past four decades, most of them from rural areas. Displacement did not end with the 2016 peace agreement: fighting among armed groups in Catatumbo, Chocó, Cauca and Nariño continues to empty villages. Families tend to settle in informal neighborhoods on the edges of cities such as Bogotá, Cali, Medellín and Cúcuta, where they live alongside large numbers of migrants from Venezuela.
Children arrive with gaps of months or years in their schooling, sometimes without documents, and often far behind their grade level. Public schools nearby may have no places, ask for paperwork families do not have, or move at a pace that leaves older newcomers behind. Families move often, and discrimination and trauma make dropping out more likely. Learning that comes to the neighborhood, adapts to each child's age and pace, and connects back to the formal system keeps these children in education.

Organization
Fundación Escuela Nueva Volvamos a la Gente · Colombia
Colombia NIT (DIAN) · No. 800.008.505-6
Founded 1987 · Headquarters: Bogotá
Runs Escuela Nueva Learning Circles for displaced and out-of-school children.
How they work: Fundación Escuela Nueva was founded by Vicky Colbert, co-author of the Escuela Nueva model that Colombia developed for rural multigrade schools. Its Learning Circles adapt that model: small groups of children of mixed ages meet in community spaces with a trained tutor, work through self-paced learning guides and advance at their own speed. Each circle is linked to a nearby public school, so children are formally enrolled and can move into regular classes.
Track record: FEN's Escuela Nueva Learning Circles, piloted for displaced children in Soacha, had expanded to six Colombian cities for displaced and migrant children by 2019.

Giving in Colombia
Decades of internal conflict over land have left Colombia with one of the world's largest internal displacement crises, and that history connects its causes. Community learning circles reach children in displaced communities, and legal support helps families pursue land restitution claims. The Colombian Red Cross assists Venezuelan migrants along the main overland route through the country, while harm reduction and peer outreach serve people who use drugs in cities shaped by the drug trade. Partners range from the national Red Cross to local foundations.
