Funds temporary learning spaces and teachers for children whose schools have closed because of insecurity.
Why this matters in Burkina Faso
Armed groups operating in Burkina Faso's north and east have targeted schools, threatened teachers and driven whole communities from their villages since the mid-2010s. At the end of February 2023, the education ministry counted 6,134 schools closed by insecurity, about a quarter of the total, affecting more than a million students. Some have reopened since, but closures shift with the fighting and many rural areas remain without functioning schools.
Displaced children usually arrive in towns such as Kaya, Dori or Ouahigouya, where schools are already overcrowded. Some families lack birth certificates or school records, which makes enrollment harder, and teachers who fled their posts are not always redeployed. Each month out of school raises the risk of child labor, early marriage and recruitment by armed groups. Temporary classrooms let children keep learning near where they now live, and catch-up teaching prepares them to rejoin the formal system at the right level.
What your gift pays for

- Stipends and training for community teachers in emergency learning spaces
- School kits, textbooks and blackboards for children who fled without supplies
- Catch-up lessons that prepare children to re-enter state schools at the right grade
Organization
Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Burkina Faso · Burkina Faso
Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Stiftelsen Flyktninghjelpen / NRC) · No. 977538319
Founded 2019 · Headquarters: Ouagadougou
Provides education in emergencies for children affected by insecurity-driven school closures in Burkina Faso.
How they work: NRC's education teams work within the national education cluster and with the ministry so that children's learning is recognized and they can move back into state schools. Its accelerated courses compress several years of primary curriculum for older children who have missed school. It also uses its Better Learning Programme, which trains teachers to help children manage stress and fear so they can concentrate in class.
Track record: In 2023 NRC, with Burkina Faso's Education Cluster and FONGIH, called for increased access to education for children affected by insecurity-driven school closures.

Giving in Burkina Faso
Insecurity has closed schools and cut off whole towns in Burkina Faso, and the two causes listed respond to both. The Norwegian Refugee Council runs temporary learning spaces and pays teachers for children whose schools have shut. The World Food Programme brings food and essential supplies into towns isolated by armed-group blockades, where roads are closed and markets have emptied. Both partners are large humanitarian agencies with established operations in the country's most affected regions.
2 causes are listed in Burkina Faso, each with its own verified organization. $199,044 has been distributed to causes in Burkina Faso since 2021.
