Funds disability civil rights litigation, policy work and legal training, as people with disabilities face unemployment roughly double the rate of people without a disability.
Why this matters in the United States
People with disabilities in the United States had an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent in 2025, roughly double the 4.1 percent rate for people without a disability, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those figures count only people actively looking for work, and labor force participation among disabled people is far lower than for the rest of the population.
The Americans with Disabilities Act has prohibited employment discrimination since 1990, but enforcement depends heavily on individuals coming forward. A worker refused a reasonable accommodation, or dismissed after disclosing a condition, usually has to file a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission within strict deadlines before going to court against an employer with its own lawyers. Damages under the law are capped, which makes many cases unattractive to lawyers working on contingency, and workers on low incomes cannot pay hourly rates. Precedent-setting cases and wider knowledge of the law help close that gap, since one ruling can change practice across many workplaces.

Organization
Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) · United States
US IRS EIN · No. 94-2620758
Founded 1979 · Headquarters: Berkeley
US disability civil rights law and policy center that litigates and advocates on disability discrimination.
How they work: DREDF was founded and is led by people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities, and it works on several fronts at once. Its attorneys bring impact litigation and file friend-of-the-court briefs in cases likely to shape how courts read disability law. Policy staff advise legislators and federal agencies, and the organization trains lawyers, advocates and families on their rights in employment, education, health care and transportation.
Track record: Founded in 1979, DREDF has litigated precedent-setting disability rights cases and, after the ADA's 1990 passage, provided nationwide ADA training and technical assistance.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
