Depopulating Villages Elder Fund

Funds visits, food and hygiene packages and helpline support for isolated older people, many of them left alone in villages and small towns as younger relatives emigrate.
Why this matters in Romania
Several million Romanians have emigrated since the 1990s, most of them working-age adults heading for Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK. In villages of Moldavia, Oltenia and the Transylvanian hills, the result shows in houses kept by grandparents alone, schools closed for lack of children and buses that no longer stop. Older people who stay often live on small farm pensions and depend on a garden plot and a few animals that become harder to tend each year.
Home care services are limited and concentrated in towns, and many rural communes have no social worker able to make regular visits. A family doctor may cover several villages, and a pharmacy can be a bus ride away. Money sent by children abroad pays the bills but cannot replace someone who calls in, notices a fall or a fever, and helps with firewood or a prescription. Regular visits put some of that presence back into village life.

Founded 1990 · Headquarters: Bucharest
Runs programmes of visits and support for lonely elderly people in Romania, including campaigns for isolated seniors.
How they work: Fundația Regală Margareta a României runs the Telefonul Vârstnicului, a free, confidential national helpline launched in 2015 that gives older people information, referrals to local services and someone to talk to. Through its Generații community centers, older volunteers mentor and help children from vulnerable families with schoolwork, giving seniors a valued role in their community. The foundation also runs a dedicated Fund for Older People and works with institutional partners and corporate sponsors to reach isolated seniors.
Track record: Around Easter 2026 it gave home visits, food and hygiene packages to almost 900 elderly people in Bucharest and locations incl. Mărășești, Baia Mare, Reghin and Sibiu.

Giving in Romania
Emigration and animal welfare frame the two Romanian causes. As younger people leave rural villages for work abroad, elderly residents left behind receive visits, food and hygiene packages and helpline support through the Royal Margareta of Romania Foundation. FOUR PAWS runs a trap-neuter-release program for street dogs, a more humane alternative to municipal culling that depends on sterilizing enough dogs to shrink numbers over time. One cause responds to a demographic shift, the other to a long-debated public issue in Romanian towns and cities.
2 causes are listed in Romania, each with its own verified organization. $503,980 has been distributed to causes in Romania since 2021.
