Deforestation Monitoring Fund

Funds satellite-based deforestation monitoring and field investigations that trace forest loss to the companies behind it, in provinces losing forest cover to palm oil expansion.
Why this matters in Indonesia
Forest clearing rarely starts with a bulldozer at the edge of a national park. More often it begins inside a concession, or on land whose legal status is disputed, with roads cut and small blocks cleared before anyone outside the area notices. By the time losses appear in annual statistics, the forest is gone and the plantation planted. Indigenous and forest-dependent communities on Borneo, Sumatra and, increasingly, Papua lose hunting grounds, rattan, honey and clean water, while orangutans and other wildlife are pushed into ever smaller fragments.
Free satellite data now makes near-real-time detection possible, but alerts are only useful if someone checks them against permit maps, verifies them on the ground and passes evidence to authorities, buyers and the communities affected. Enforcement is uneven and often slow, and many villages have no way to document what is happening on their customary land. Independent monitoring fills that gap and puts evidence in front of those able to act on it.
What your gift pays for
- Analysis of satellite imagery and alerts to flag new clearing in forest and peatland
- Field verification trips that confirm clearing on the ground and document who is responsible
- Cross-checking alerts against concession and permit maps to identify likely illegal clearing
- Annual and provincial deforestation reports shared with regulators, buyers, financiers and journalists
Organization
Auriga Nusantara · Indonesia
Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), Indonesia · No. AHU-1605.AH.01.04.Tahun 2010
Founded 2009 · Headquarters: Bogor
Indonesian NGO that monitors deforestation, including palm oil-driven loss.
How they work: Auriga combines satellite analysis with field investigation. Its team tracks forest loss across the archipelago, publishes annual figures broken down by province and driver, and traces cleared land to the companies and permits behind it, including in palm oil, pulpwood and mining supply chains. Findings go to government agencies, buyers, financiers and the media to press for enforcement and for companies to honor no-deforestation commitments.
Track record: Auriga's monitoring recorded 433,751 hectares of deforestation in Indonesia in 2025, a 66% rise on 2024, with Kalimantan the most deforested region.

Giving in Indonesia
Forests, reefs and the communities that depend on them dominate the Indonesian list. Satellite monitoring and field investigations trace forest loss to palm oil, AMAN supports indigenous communities contesting palm oil and mining concessions, and coral nurseries restore reefs damaged by bleaching and dynamite fishing. Remote island patients receive TB diagnosis and treatment in a country with roughly 10 percent of global cases, while other funds support river monitoring and water testing below polluted rivers and shelter for families evacuated from volcanoes.
6 causes are listed in Indonesia, each with its own verified organization. $646,245 has been distributed to causes in Indonesia since 2021.
