Funds cyclone-resistant home rebuilding for island communities hit by repeated severe storms.
Why this matters in Vanuatu
Severe cyclones now reach Vanuatu's 80-odd inhabited and uninhabited islands in quick succession. Pam devastated the country in 2015 and Harold followed in 2020; Judy and Kevin struck within days of each other in March 2023, and Lola arrived that October, unusually early in the season. In December 2024 a magnitude 7.3 earthquake also hit near Port Vila, damaging buildings in the capital.
Most rural families build their own homes from timber, bamboo and woven thatch, or with corrugated iron sheets that become dangerous projectiles in high winds if poorly fixed. Outer islands are reached by boat or small plane, so materials cost far more there than in Port Vila or Luganville, and many households rebuild with whatever survived, repeating the weaknesses that failed. Customary land tenure and small cash incomes mean few people borrow for construction. Simple safer-building practices, such as bracing, tie-downs and a well-pitched roof, cost relatively little but depend on local carpenters knowing them.
What your gift pays for
- Hurricane straps, bracing timber and roofing screws that tie roofs and walls to foundations
- Shipping timber, roofing and fixings by boat to outer-island communities
- Safer-building training for village carpenters and households before they rebuild
- Shelter tool kits so families can start repairs soon after a storm passes
Organization
Vanuatu Red Cross Society · Vanuatu
Founding law: Vanuatu Red Cross Society Act · No. Act 23 of 1982 (CAP 151)
Founded 1992 · Headquarters: Port Vila
Runs post-cyclone shelter programs and safer-building training after TC Lola.
How they work: The society works through branches in each province and volunteers who live in island communities, which matters where help often has to travel by sea. Its shelter work follows the Red Cross Movement's build-back-safer approach: kits of tools and materials come with sessions on key messages for stronger construction using locally available materials. It also stocks relief supplies before the cyclone season and supports community preparedness alongside the National Disaster Management Office.
Track record: After Tropical Cyclone Lola in October 2023, the society ran shelter kit and safe-building awareness training on Pentecost, Malekula and Ambrym in 2024.

Giving in Vanuatu
Repeated severe cyclones have damaged homes across Vanuatu's island communities, sometimes before families have finished rebuilding from the previous storm. The Vanuatu Red Cross Society uses this fund for cyclone-resistant home rebuilding, so that new houses are better able to stand up to the next one. It is currently the single cause we list in Vanuatu; more may follow as partners in the Pacific are vetted.
This is currently the only cause we list in Vanuatu. $123,968 has been distributed to causes in Vanuatu since 2021.
