Funds home repairs and livelihood recovery for coastal communities hit by cyclones.
Why this matters in Mozambique
Nearly 2,500 kilometers of Mozambican coastline face the warm Mozambique Channel, which feeds some of the strongest storms in the southwest Indian Ocean. Idai and Kenneth made landfall six weeks apart in 2019; Chido tore through Cabo Delgado in December 2024, and Dikeledi and Jude followed in early 2025. Fishing families and smallholders living in houses of wattle, mud and thatch see roofs ripped away and walls washed out, sometimes more than once in a few years.
Recovery tends to stall once the emergency phase ends. Tarpaulins and food arrive in the first weeks, but the slower work of rebuilding with stronger roof connections and replacing boats, nets and seed stock often goes unfunded. Many coastal districts in Nampula, Zambezia, Sofala and Cabo Delgado are among the poorest in the country, and in the north, families displaced by the insurgency had already crowded into host communities before the storms arrived, stretching scarce shelter even further.
What your gift pays for
- Roofing sheets, timber and fixings to rebuild houses with storm-resistant roof connections
- Replacement fishing nets, small boats and tools for households whose livelihoods washed away
- Seeds and farm inputs so families can replant fields damaged by floodwater and salt
- Safer-construction training for local builders and community volunteers before the next season

Supports shelter and recovery for cyclone-affected coastal communities.
How they work: As the national society within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Mozambique Red Cross works through provincial branches and volunteers who live in the districts they serve. Before landfall, volunteers help spread cyclone warnings and move people to safer places; afterwards they register affected households and hand out shelter kits. Its recovery work usually pairs shelter repair with safer-building messages and livelihood support, delivered alongside partner Red Cross societies and the IFRC.
Track record: Within a month of Cyclone Idai in 2019, the Red Cross in Mozambique had assisted over 38,000 survivors with shelter kits, clean water and health care, launching a 24-month recovery programme.

Giving in Mozambique
Natural hazards and conflict both displace families in Mozambique. The Mozambique Red Cross funds home repairs and livelihood recovery for coastal communities struck by cyclones, while UNHCR provides shelter kits and essential supplies for families who fled the conflict in Cabo Delgado province in the north. The two causes respond to different emergencies, one recurring with the storm season and the other tied to an insurgency that has continued for years.
2 causes are listed in Mozambique, each with its own verified organization. $190,409 has been distributed to causes in Mozambique since 2021.
