Funds coral nursery and transplant programs on reefs damaged by bleaching events and dynamite fishing.
Why this matters in Indonesia
Nusa Penida and its neighboring islands sit on the Lombok Strait, where cold, nutrient-rich currents feed some of the most diverse reefs in the Coral Triangle. Seaweed farming, fishing and dive tourism support island households, and all three depend on healthy coral. Destructive fishing, including blast fishing that leaves fields of loose rubble, and marine heatwaves that cause mass bleaching have left patches of reef unable to recover by themselves, because coral larvae rarely survive on shifting broken fragments.
Marine protected areas restrict harmful activities, but protection alone does not restore a reef already reduced to rubble. Active restoration stabilizes the seabed so that transplanted fragments, and later wild larvae, have something solid to grow on. The work only lasts when it is paired with monitoring, local stewardship and income for coastal villages; otherwise restored sites can be lost to the next careless anchor or illegal catch.
What your gift pays for
- Steel Reef Star frames that stabilize loose rubble so transplanted coral can attach and grow
- Collection, nursery holding and transplanting of coral fragments by trained local divers
- Boat fuel, dive equipment and air fills for regular planting and maintenance dives
- Monitoring surveys that track coral survival, growth and bleaching at restored sites
Organization
Coral Triangle Center (Yayasan Pusat Segitiga Karang) · Indonesia
Founded 2010 · Headquarters: Sanur, Bali
Bali-based foundation running coral restoration and adopt-a-coral programs.
How they work: CTC works with government agencies and local communities on managing marine protected areas, including Nusa Penida, and trains MPA managers and practitioners from across the Coral Triangle at its center in Sanur. Its restoration uses Reef Stars, sand-coated hexagonal steel frames planted with coral fragments and linked into a web over rubble beds. The reef work is paired with outreach and learning programs for coastal villages and visitors.
Track record: Since January 2024 CTC has planted 15,000 coral fragments on over 1,000 Reef Stars, restoring around 600 m² of reef in the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area.

Giving in Indonesia
Forests, reefs and the communities that depend on them dominate the Indonesian list. Satellite monitoring and field investigations trace forest loss to palm oil, AMAN supports indigenous communities contesting palm oil and mining concessions, and coral nurseries restore reefs damaged by bleaching and dynamite fishing. Remote island patients receive TB diagnosis and treatment in a country with roughly 10 percent of global cases, while other funds support river monitoring and water testing below polluted rivers and shelter for families evacuated from volcanoes.
