Funds church-run shelter and food distribution for displaced families near the front line.
Why this matters in Ukraine
Families within range of artillery and drones in the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Sumy and Kherson regions face constant decisions about whether to stay or leave. Those who remain are disproportionately older, disabled or poor, people for whom evacuation means losing a home and the only network they have. Those who leave often move only as far as the nearest large city, where rents have risen and collective centers in dormitories and schools are full.
The state pays a monthly allowance to registered internally displaced people, but the amount is small and eligibility was narrowed in 2024. Repeated attacks on the energy grid mean winters bring long power and heating cuts. Churches are often among the last institutions still open in frontline towns, and parishes and church-run centers have become places where displaced families find a hot meal, a bed and reliable information.
What your gift pays for
- Beds, bedding and heaters for collective shelters housing displaced families
- Hot meals and food parcels distributed through parish centers near the front line
- Generators and fuel that keep shelters warm and lit during power outages
- Evacuation transport and first-night accommodation for people leaving frontline towns

Founded 1994 · Headquarters: Lviv
Church-based humanitarian organisation providing shelter, food and support to displaced families across Ukraine, including near the front line.
How they work: Caritas Ukraine is the charitable arm of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and works through a network of regional and local Caritas organizations, many attached to parishes. That structure lets it respond through people who already live in affected towns. Alongside food and shelter it provides cash assistance, psychosocial support and home care for older people, and it coordinates with other humanitarian agencies and local authorities.
Track record: From February 24 to early May 2022, Caritas Ukraine and Caritas-Spes together assisted more than 1.22 million people with shelter, meals and other aid via 50+ local centres.

Giving in Ukraine
War shapes every Ukrainian cause on the list. Two support elderly people who stayed in frontline villages, too frail or unwilling to leave, through home-based care and regular supply deliveries. Caritas Ukraine funds church-run shelter and food for displaced families near the front. The remaining two serve veterans: trauma care through Veteran Hub, and prosthetic limbs and physical rehabilitation through Superhumans Center, needs that grow as the fighting continues.
5 causes are listed in Ukraine, each with its own verified organization. $265,284 has been distributed to causes in Ukraine since 2021.
